The Canary Islands are part of Spain but they're located much closer to Africa than the Spanish mainland. The seven islands are in the Atlantic Ocean, 1,350 kilometres south of the Iberian Peninsula. Their nearest neighbour is Morocco (95 kilometres east of Fuerteventura) and the climate is wonderful all year round with temperatures rarely falling below 18C in the winter and rising above 24C in the summer.

They call the Canaries "The Land of Eternal Spring". The sub-tropical climate is regulated by the Gulf Stream and Trade Winds and any time of year is a good time to visit with guaranteed sunshine, virtually no rainfall and non-stop tourist activity. Small wonder that 11 million international tourists migrate to these shores each year!

The archipelago consists of five main holiday islands - La Palma, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote - and the two, small unspoilt islands of Hierro and Gomera. The islands are the tips of a vast volcanic mountain range lying beneath the Atlantic Ocean. The fact that four of Spain's seven major national nature reserves are located here reflects the extraordinary wealth of natural beauty to be found in the Canaries.

I stay at the San Antonio Hotel every visit to Lanzarote. One of the oldest hotels on the island it can still offer good size room, good views, good food and friendly staff.

We loved our holiday in Fuerteventura, it was worth every penny, wonderful, quiet, value for money, cheap to eat out, the only draw back was that having a 15 year old son there wasnt enough to keep him busy... that is until he met up with other teenagers! The beaches in Fuerteventura were lovely and the bar owners and shop keepers were very pleasant

I feel I should set the record straight since this hotel has had an undeserved poor review. We stayed for 7 nights and desperately wished we'd booked for 14. The hotel was very full while we were there, but we found the reception staff extremely helpful (although going to reception always involved a long wait). The towel system was clearly explained at check in and we were given our towel tickets then. Our superior room had a magnificent sea view, the sound of other guests was never a problem, and we didn't notice the air-conditioning either.

It was difficult to make reservations in two of the three restaurants where they were required, because the hotel only takes same-day bookings. The food in these restaurants didn't quite live up to expectations. However, we were happy with the food and service in the buffet restaurant - the trick is to avoid the busiest times, especially when families are eating.

Thomsons made it explicit that the hotel is unsuitable for people with walking difficulties, and it most definitely is - it is on so many levels that every journey involves climbing many steps, let alone the steps at both ends of the beach lift! Our main grouse was that the hotel allows guests to reserve sun loungers round the pool by leaving towels on them, and many get up before 8 a.m. to do so! We think this practice should be stopped - no body on a sun lounger, it's free for you to use!

Could have been better User rated 2/5

booked a week in Tenerife for 2 adults and 2 kids but decided to stay in the North west of the Island in puerto de santiago. Apart from the resort hotel which tbh wasn`t great there wasn`t a great deal to do. We ended up travelling down to Las Americas most days for the entertainment waterparks and better beaches. Tenerife on the whole is great and i wouldn`t put anyone off. I would however recommend the southern part like Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos as more agreeable locations especially if travelling with young ones

Worst Hotel User rated 1/5
Reviewed by Ian on 23-4-2008 (Surrey)
We stayed at the Beatriz Playa in Nov. last, and when i say this was by far the worst hotel we have ever had the misfortune to frequent, i would not be lying. The food was inedible, the staff rude, and the hotel is in drastic need of updating, to such an extent that there are holes in the ceilings, tiles on the floors are missing, and the offending areas roped off, the carpets are filthy/stained and general clenliness is below par. We opted for a hotel trasnsfer after 1 night to the Jameos Playa, a hotel of the same star rating and one which we have used on many occasions. To facilitate this change the holiday company charged us a further ᆪ517 on top of theᆪ1400 we had already paid for our 1 week half board stay. I am at present taking the judicial route and sueing the holiday company. I do hope this assists future holidaymakers in making decisions as to the hotel they book on what is and will always remain a most beautiful and relaxing holiday destination
