Alexander The Great User rated 5/5
Reviewed by Tony on 18-6-2008 (UK)
My wife and I had a week on The Alexander the Great from 3 - 9 October. We were in "The Reds" suite.

It was truly a mesmerizing experience. I could not fault it.
The quality of the suite surpassed what I expected. Excellent.
The food and the service was out of this world.
The restaurant manager was a class apart, I'd have him here in
London tomorrow if I could!
The Chef produced the most varietous food display every day, amazing!
The bar staff were flawless with their service and so polite and
efficient.
The room stewards were the best I have ever encountered for service.

The boat, the Nile, the overall service, the weather, the sights we saw made
it the best week's holiday I probably ever had - far exceeding any of my
expectations.

The tour guide, Ayman, was quite amazing - honest, helpful, he obviously
loves the English
and when I go back to Luxor I'll look him up as he was such a true
gentleman.

I met the owner of the Alexander the Great whilst on board and we have a
great talk
together about service, standards and style and I told him personally that
he had the
perfect boat here on the Nile and he should be a very proud man.

Well done to you all - service still lives - it is Egypt, on the Nile, in
one boat in particular, it's called The Alexander the Great.....well done.

Valley of the Kings User rated 5/5
Reviewed by Veronica on 18-6-2008 (Wigan)
it was our first cruise and experience of Egypt. We treated very well from the start to the finish of the holiday, especially by the staff on the boat. I knew I would love the history but our guide on the cruise, really brought it to life and carried out the organisation of the trips very smoothly. There were many high points to the cruise, Abu Simbel, Karnak Temple but probably the pinnacle was the early morning balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings - definitely worth getting up before dawn. I twisted my husband's arm and dragged him on this cruise and I'm pleased to say that he is as enthusiastic as me about coming back for another cruise holiday.

Few Concerns User rated 3/5

I would love to undertake a Nile cruise and would really appreciate any advice or information regarding my husbands concerns. I suffer badly with motion sickness, I can't travel on the moving walkways at the airport as it makes me feel ill, pedaloes usually the same - although the last time I was on one a few weeks ago, the Ferry was leaving Nuweiba Port travelling to Aquaba so hence the waves were coming in !!!!

My husband thinks I will step foot on the ship and say "I don't feel well"
feedback from Nile sailors who usaully suffer "sea sickness" would be greatly appreciated.

My husbands other concern is I am asthmatic and during our trip to St. Catherines Monastery (July ) I found it to be so dusty and spent the whole time with a scarf covering my face trying to breathe and taking my inhaler.

If we travelled during May, would there be the same amount of dust be about.

I appreciate that this may an absurd question and difficult to answer, apart from "what do you expect in the desert", but anyone who suffers from asthma will understand my or should I say my husbands concerns

Regards

Tricia

Tricia,

Don't know about the motion sickness, but it's true that the boat has no major up and down movement. I never felt like I was moving on the Nile - except when the captain carelessly rammed the bank!

Regarding the dust, well, the Nile being The Nile, it is almost completely lined on both banks with green fertile areas, certainly along the cruise route. Sand and/or dust blowing around should not be a problem. The only time I have ever encountered dust was queueing to enter Karnak for the Sound and Light Show. The car park alongside the avenue of sphinxes is quite dusty and that evening there was a bit of a breeze blowing, swirling it around.

You do realise that with the slight breeze caused by the forward motion and the baking sun, that Mike will get even darker than he is! Passengers will probably start asking him for drinks and towels!

MS Magic User rated 3/5
Reviewed by John and Emily on 3-7-2008 (London)
We were on deck 2 of MS Magic 1, where our cabin was towards the bow and was quiet. The upper decks, 3 and 4, had huge windows but we learned that some cabins in the stern were noisy, especially whilst under way.

Our Nile cruise started from Luxor during early evening, whilst we were busy finding seats and meeting new people in the dining room. We sailed through the night, arriving at Edfu mid morning, having passed quietly through Esna Lock during the night.

Following our visit to the Temple of Horus we cruised on to Aswan, arriving during late evening. The next two days were as per the itinerary with visits to the two Aswan Dams, the Temple of Philae on an island and a trip on a felucca, a sailing boat taking about 20 passengers, visiting the botanical gardens on Kitchener Island in the middle of the Nile.

We also invested £115 each for a visit to Abu Simbel where a huge temple has been moved block by block to avoid it being flooded when the Aswan High Dam was built over 20 years ago. We flew down on the 4.30am flight, taking half an hour, and were on site before dawn. The 150 people on the plane were the only ones there, so we had plenty of room to wander around inside the temple and look at the carvings. As we were leaving at about 8.15am there were thousands of people arriving after a 3 hour journey in convoys of buses.

The Abu Simbel visit was expensive but worth it and the early flight was a real advantage although at the time it seemed unnecessary as it was very cold waiting for sunrise. In line with the programme we set off on the return leg to Luxor, mooring overnight at Kom Ombo having passed through the lock at Esna just after dark.

Following our morning visit to a local temple we continued our cruise back to Luxor where during the next two days we visited all the sites as advertised on the programme.

Whilst visiting the ancient sites we were in a group led by an Egyptologist named Galal, with the affectionate nickname of Big Daddy. Without his commentary we would have been looking at piles of stone with funny drawings or carvings on them but his knowledge and ability to make each site come alive was undoubtedly the icing on the cake.

Whilst at Luxor we visited a shopping arcade right opposite the moorings. It was next to the council offices. I mention this as we were pleasantly surprised to find that we were not mobbed by 'in your face' sellers. There was a general banter but no real pressure. It worked. We took a leisurely time to buy small presents to take home.

All meals on Magic 1 were self-service with a reasonable choice, although breakfast was very similar each day. The week was enhanced by the friendly helpful nature of all the crew, particularly our waiter and cabin boy.

We would thoroughly recommend the cruise although we were not totally prepared for the very cold biting wind of the first few days.

All Inclusive Magic 1 User rated 5/5
Reviewed by Pam on 3-7-2008 (Lincolnshire)
We returned from Egypt after a wonderful week cruising the Nile and visiting all the temples to Aswan Dam. The Egyptologist Ehab (THE SILVER FOX!) gave so much information it made us feel that we understood all about this ancient culture. Once we had all this information we were able to digest it all relaxing on the sun deck of the cruise boat MAGIC 1. Being all-inclusive a gin and tonic went down well.

The extra week in Luxor at the Sonesta St George was another experience; the entrance hall alone set the tone. The room that we had was magnificent with a wonderful view over the Nile every morning we could see all the hot air balloons ascending over the valley of the kings. Having been up we knew what a wonderful feeling this was. The contrasts in Luxor have to be experienced very exciting.

This was our first time in Egypt but it will not be the last.

King Tut 111 User rated 4/5
Reviewed by Chris and June on 4-7-2008 (Brentwood)
We have just returned from the most marvellous two weeks in Luxor.

The first week we spent on the King Tut 111 cruising and sightseeing the most wonderful sights in Egypt.

We had a guide who was most informative and friendly and could not do enough for you and answered all questions knowledgeably.

The staff aboard the ship could not do enough for you and were very friendly too.

The food was varied and plentiful and after a long day sightseeing it was great just to sit on the sun deck in the evening with a few drinks and relax.

The second week we spent at the Sonesta San George in Luxor.

Talk about luxury!!

The hotel was the best I have ever stayed in and the rooms had a marvellous view over the Nile. The food was excellent as were the staff.

The Egyptian people are the friendliest I have ever met and I cant wait to go back again.

Outside the hotel I recommend "Snobs" for eating as the food is delicous and for a drink you should go to "Murphys Irish Bar" or "John and Johns".

Shopping is great if you like to haggle. It is well worth it to get a bargain.

The only critisism that I would make is that there is not enough entertainment on the ship in the evening and the all inclusive does not start till 10 30 in the morning. so if you get up to go on the excursions and get back before then you have to pay for water etc which you really need when you get back on board.

Also after your evening meal there was no further food available such as a snack crisps nuts or even a sandwich later in the evening which I think would have been good but do go and try it you will enjoy it.

I would not hesitate to reccommend this holiday to anyone.
